How to Pot Up Your Dahlias: A Simple Guide to Get a Head Start 🌱

Spring is in the air, and if you're as dahlia-obsessed as we are, you're probably itching to get things going. One of the best ways to get a jump on the season? Potting up your dahlia tubers.

This little early-season trick encourages stronger growth, earlier blooms, and healthier plants when it’s time to plant them out. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Does “Potting Up” Mean?

Potting up means starting your dahlia tubers in pots indoors or under cover before the last frost date. It gives them time to wake up, sprout, and develop roots in a safe, warm space — so when you finally plant them in the ground, they hit it running.

When to Pot Up Dahlias

In the UK, aim to pot up your dahlias from late March through April, about 4–6 weeks before your last frost. You want them to have time to get going, but not become leggy or rootbound before they go outside.

What You’ll Need

  • Dahlia tubers from Dahlia Beach! (firm, healthy, and ready to grow)

  • Multi-purpose compost (we love a peat-free mix — Westland’s is a great option!)

  • Pots – around 2–3 litres in size, with drainage holes

  • A trowel

  • A label (trust us, you won’t remember which is which)

Step-by-Step: How to Pot Up Your Dahlias

1. Inspect Your Tubers

Check each tuber for firmness — avoid any that are soft or mouldy. Look for visible eyes (tiny growth points) near the crown. No eyes yet? No panic — they often appear once they warm up.

2. Fill Your Pot

Fill the pot about ¾ full with compost. You want the crown (where the tuber meets the stem) to sit just below the surface.

3. Nestle In the Tuber

Place the tuber horizontally with the crown facing up. Gently fill around it with compost, covering the tuber but leaving the crown just peeking out. Don’t compact the soil too much — they like a bit of breathing room.

4. Water Lightly

Give it a light water to settle the compost. Don’t overdo it — dahlias hate sitting in soggy soil before they’ve got roots.

5. Label Your Pot

Pop in a label with the variety name. Future You will be so grateful.

6. Give Them Light & Warmth

Place your pots in a bright, frost-free space like a greenhouse, conservatory, or sunny windowsill. You’ll start to see shoots in a few weeks — magic!

What’s Next?

Once all risk of frost has passed (usually mid to late May in the UK), your potted-up dahlias can be planted outside. You’ll notice they’re already strong, leafy, and well ahead of the game — all thanks to your potting-up prep.

Final Tips

  • No heat mat? No problem. They’ll sprout just fine with natural light and a bit of patience.

  • See shoots but no roots yet? That’s totally normal. Let them grow!

  • Going away? Make sure they’re not drying out — but still, easy on the water.

Happy potting — and get ready for a summer full of flowers. 💐Got questions or want to show off your potted beauties? Tag us on Instagram @dahliabeach — we love seeing what you’re growing.
