Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a cut flower garden?
A cut flower garden has two purposes - to grow beautiful flowers that make your garden look gorgeous and that you can pick for your home. They’re called ‘cut and come again’ flowers which means what it says and the best thing about it; the most you cut, the more flowers come! I’m not being biased here but the true champion of the cut and come again flower is the dahlia.
  • When will I get my Dahlia Beach?
Most of the tubers sold in the UK come from farms in Holland and they get dug up in the winter and shipped in February. Once the arrive, we'll sort them into our gorgeous collections and carefully package them to ship out to you. We're aiming for delivery in early spring and you'll get an email to let you know when they're on their way.
  • How do you grow dahlias?
Dahlias are delivered in February/March time as tubers and they have to be grown in pots with compost ‘under cover.’ This means either in a green house, convservatory, window sill or even in a plastic crate in your garden with a lid. Anywhere this is ‘undercover’ that means they won’t be affected by frost. When the risk of frost has gone, usually the last week of May, you can then plant your dahlias into the ground and you’ll be rewarded with beautiful flowers from July until the first frost. Alternatively you can buy them as ‘rooted cuttings’ in July, which are small plants taken from a tuber in the spring. You can pop these straight in the garden and usually they’’ll produce flowers within 4 weeks.
  • What do you do with dahlias in the winter?
It’s totally up to you. If you like where they are and are not planning on planting lots of things around them, you can leave them in the ground and cover them with a load of soil improver (compost from the garden centre will do) This acts as a blanket so they don’t get frost bite over winter. The other option is to dig them up and store them somewhere dry and repeat the process above come spring. The benefit of doing this is that you can grow other plants in that area that will flower earlier in the season (don’t forget that dahlias don’t flower until July)
  • Can I buy single tubers?
Dahlia Beach is a cut flower garden in a box and therefore we don’t sell single tubers. A huge amount of consideration has gone into selecting the right colour hues and combinations that will look incredible when planted together in your garden and in a vase. Each box comes with all the video support you need to grow a cut flower garden, a carefully designed planting plan and growing guide.
  • What if I change my mind?
Whilst we hope that you love your Dahlia Beach product, it's absolutely fine if you change your mind. Please head to our Returns Policy at the bottom of our website.
  • Can I grow dahlias in the shade?
Dahlias won't grow very well in the shade as they originally come from Mexico and prefer full sun. You can plant them in semi shade they just won't produce as many flowers.
  • Can you grow dahlias in pot?
Most dahlias do well in pots but most of the tubers in my collection grow to over 1m so you'll need big pots to ensure that they don't tip over in the wind. They are also thirsty plants so during the summer months, will need watering every day (*something to bear in mind if you're thinking of going away on holiday as you would have to ask a friend or neighbour.
